Students get NCAA Division I experience for a week
The week of September 19-23 provided the SJF Volleyball Academy with a great opportunity to receive training from a top level coach. Derek Schroeder, better known as "Coach Dex", came to Yellowknife to work with the students at Sir John. He has been coaching in the NCAA at the Division I level for 13 years. In eight years as the Head Coach at Samford University (Birmingham, AL), Dex's teams won four division titles and Two Conference Championships and made two NCAA Championship tournament appearances. Dex's
ability to train the technical side of the game, and get the most out of his athletes is what sets him apart from his peers.
Having worked along side Dex for several years both in Canada and in the NCAA, Mr. Shearme knew that it would be incredibly beneficial to bring him up to expose our Volleyball Academy athletes to his style and tempo of coaching. "We were very lucky that schedules worked out and he was able to make the trip North. As expected, he ran a great week of training and I saw every athlete take positive steps throughout the week. I'm excited to build off of the things that the students learned this week" said Mr. Shearme.
Dylan Harker had this to say, "It was nice to have Coach Dex here to push us and he was able to show us what we are capable of doing right now to improve our skills."
In addition to running practices for the Volleyball Academy, Dex was also able to run some of our school practices in the evenings. As a result, he was able to have an impact on a very large number of the students at Sir John.
