Education Leaders agree to keep schools closed

To all students, parents/guardians and stakeholders: Attached is a letter from Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) Minister R.J. Simpson outlining that all NWT Education Leaders have agreed to keep schools closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This follows the release of a public health document entitled "Emerging Wisely", which indicated that schools could reopen as part of Phase 1 of that plan if they demonstrate they can follow additional physical distancing and cleaning rules. While this is encouraging news as it relates to the current public health situation in the NWT, schools are facing a series of complex operational challenges that would make reopening difficult, including a lack of teachers in some communities, concerns from local governments and a lack of personal protective equipment to name a few. YK1 will continue to work closely with ECE, the Northwest Territories Teachers' Association and other education bodies on continued learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, and then discuss options for the 2020-2021 school year based on the latest advice from the territory's chief public health officer.
